Buying A Timeshare Safely
If you have decided buying a timeshare is for you and understand the financial commitment you will make, the next thing you need to do is to find out what you need to know, particularly if attending timeshare presentations. The trick is to do your research, and do it thoroughly unless you want to make big losses, so find out how to buy a timeshare safely.
Timeshare presentations are often the place many think about buying a timeshare and they certainly have their place especially for fact gathering. However, never be swayed by what are often false claims made by some timeshare sales people. Never allow yourself to feel guilty or to be swayed by a hard luck story as this is often a sales tactic, and not a nice one at that. Always go pre-armed with your questions and make sure you get a decent answer. The presentation should take between 60- 90 minutes after which you will frequently be subjected to a great deal of flattery and persuasion techniques! If you don't go to the presentation intending to just get the free gift on offer, you won't mind so much about walking out when things get a little heavy.
Be forewarned, companies often insist you take your partner and your credit card so you can’t make the excuse, "I have to ask my partner" or “I don’t have my credit card with me”! If you are going to a presentation where you have ‘won’ a free gift you will be told the credit card is required to verify who you are. Again, if you don’t want the gift they can’t say much!
Look carefully at the whole package on offer and get them to explain exactly what the ongoing costs will be. This is often skimmed over in presentations and overwhelmed by all the glorious photographs to tempt you! One important thing you should always ask if you attend a timeshare presentation is the cancellation grace period and the terms and conditions of that contract.
If you think you have found somewhere you would be interested in, check out the company thoroughly and make sure they are legitimate. Get references from other timeshare owners before you buy a timeshare from them if at all possible.
The timeshare companies often recommend legal professionals and have finance deals on offer if you need one. I would suggest that finding your own independent solicitor and finance would be cheaper and better. Make sure your legal professional is experienced in timeshares and familiar with the laws in the country you are buying as they will be aware of any possible pitfalls. Ideally, one who is based in the country and who speaks your language.
Remember you don't need to buy new. There are often some great deals on timeshare resales. One of the best places to look is at the resorts themselves who often sell on behalf of the owners. There are also several resale web sites and even Ebay will sell timeshares (although be sure to protect yourself against fraud when buying off the Internet).
So, if you think buying a timeshare is for you, keep yourself and your money safe and do your research properly, take independent legal advice and know what you are getting into. Timeshares can provide a wonderful vacation for you every year without the worry of wondering where to go, what to do and how much it's going to cost.
